NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are set to take part in a live Earth-to-space call from the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday, September 13. The live session will start around 11:45 pm IST, with the astronauts participating in a Question and Answer session.
NASA announced that the news conference will stream live on NASA+, the NASA app, and the agency’s official website. Viewers can also watch it through social media platforms. The event offers a unique chance to hear directly from the astronauts aboard the ISS in low Earth orbit.
Sunita Williams, who has been in space since June 2024, and her colleague Butch Wilmore, are currently on an extended mission on the ISS. Initially, they traveled aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, but their return to Earth has been delayed until February 2025 due to technical issues.
The Starliner spacecraft, originally scheduled to bring the astronauts back in June, faced several delays. Despite successful thruster tests by Boeing, NASA decided it was safer to delay their return, opting instead for a SpaceX Dragon capsule.
Earlier this month, the uncrewed Starliner returned safely to Earth. The spacecraft landed in New Mexico on September 7 after successfully completing a mission. NASA reported that the Starliner proved its safety as a spacecraft for future missions.
However, Williams and Wilmore will remain on the ISS until their return in February 2025, now part of Expedition 71/72. Their extended mission highlights the complexities of space travel and the importance of safety in manned space missions.
The astronauts’ live Q&A will provide insights into their time aboard the ISS, sharing their experiences and answering questions about life in space. This session allows the public a closer look at NASA’s operations and the lives of astronauts during long-duration missions.
