Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Luxon have jointly called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and a renewed effort towards a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.
At a press conference on Monday, Luxon emphasized their united stance: “We both are very united in calling for an immediate ceasefire, getting the parties around the negotiating table, and finding a two-state solution.”
Anwar, expressing skepticism about current ceasefire prospects, criticized the lack of commitment from key players, particularly the United States. “The only hope is to engage the United States to take a stronger stance,” Anwar stated.
Malaysia, a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause, continues to advocate for a two-state resolution. Anwar maintains positive relations with Hamas’s political leadership but clarifies his non-involvement with its military activities.
During his three-day visit to Malaysia, Luxon also announced that New Zealand would enhance defense cooperation with Malaysia. As part of this, New Zealand will deploy a P8 Poseidon patrol aircraft to Butterworth, Penang for joint exercises.
