Kochi Water Metro to Add Four New Terminals: A Major Boost to City Connectivity

New Kochi Water Metro terminals under construction across city backwaters
Four new terminals to boost Kochi Water Metro connectivity

Kochi’s Water Metro project is moving into a new stage of growth. KWML will soon build four more terminals at Edakochi, Thoppumpady, Varappuzha, and the Ernakulam Jetty. Because tender procedures have already begun, construction is expected to start soon. With this expansion, Kochi’s backwater transport system becomes stronger and more accessible for everyone.

A Growing Water Transport Network for Kochi

The Kochi Water Metro is one of India’s most forward-looking transport projects. Today, the network includes 10 active terminals, and work on three more is already in progress. The four new terminals are a key part of Phase I, which aims to improve travel across multiple islands.

KWML Chief Operating Officer Sajan P. John explained that the new Ernakulam Boat Jetty terminal will match the size and design of the High Court terminal. KWML plans to issue the tender for all four terminals together, which helps the team speed up the project.

More Terminals Planned Within the City

Recently, the Chief Minister opened the Mattancherry and Willingdon Island terminals and announced that the Water Metro may add two more terminals inside Kochi. This step shows the government’s long-term commitment to better public transport.

The land for the Varappuzha terminal is ready, so the team can start construction without delay. This quick start may help the project maintain its pace and reduce overall timelines.

Addressing Silt Accumulation at New Terminal Sites

Some new terminal locations, especially Thoppumpady and Edakochi, struggle with heavy silt deposits. Because silt can block boat movement, KWML must handle this issue before construction begins.

Earlier, the team cleared a large amount of silt at Mattancherry before opening that terminal. Since the same problem may appear in Thoppumpady, KWML plans to carry out similar dredging work there. This preparation ensures smoother operations once the terminals open to the public.

Better Routes and Stronger Connectivity

The upcoming terminals will improve travel across Kochi in several ways:

  • Thoppumpady and Ernakulam Jetty will connect directly to central city terminals.
  • Varappuzha will likely link to Cheranellur and South Chittoor, strengthening access to northern Kochi.

These routes will reduce congestion, shorten travel time, and offer a clean and efficient alternative to road transport. As a result, commuters and tourists will enjoy a more convenient travel experience.

Phase I: A Vision for a 78-km Backwater Network

The Water Metro’s first phase aims to deliver:

  • 15 routes
  • 10 islands connected
  • 78 km of water network
  • 38 terminals
  • 78 electric-hybrid ferries

This system will support over 33,000 island residents and many more daily commuters. With eco-friendly hybrid ferries, the Water Metro sets a strong example for sustainable urban mobility in India.

Phase II: New Routes Under Study

KWML is also preparing new services under Phase II. These plans follow directions from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, while KMRL continues to guide the project’s vision and design.

One of the most important routes being considered is the Aluva–Nedumbassery Airport corridor. If this route becomes operational, it may offer smoother airport access for thousands of travellers.

Conclusion: A Strong Step Toward a Smarter Transport Future

The construction of four new terminals marks an exciting moment for Kochi. With better connectivity, faster routes, and greener travel options, the Water Metro continues to transform how the city moves. As these developments take shape, Kochi stands closer to becoming a model for sustainable and modern public transport.
