THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has started its week-long state-level Onam celebrations with a grand cultural show. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the festival represents the values of unity, equality, and communal harmony, which are also part of the government’s ‘Nava Kerala’ vision.
Speaking at the opening ceremony at Nishagandhi Auditorium, Kanakakkunnu, the CM said, “Kerala’s unity and inclusive mindset are the reasons for our state’s growth and development.” This year’s theme is Onam Orumayude Eenam – the Real Kerala Story.
Festival Highlights
- Around 10,000 artists are performing at various programs.
- 33 venues across Thiruvananthapuram will host cultural events.
- A drone show will be a major attraction.
- The celebrations will end on September 9 with a grand procession from Vellayambalam to East Fort, led by Governor Rajendra Arlekar. Around 150 floats will take part.
Tourism and Inclusivity
Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas said Kerala’s people and their hospitality are the biggest strength of the state’s tourism sector. Education Minister V Sivankutty added that arrangements have been made so everyone can take part in the festival.
Tamil actor Ravi Mohan (Jayam Ravi), the chief guest, said that Kerala feels like his “second home.” Director-actor Basil Joseph highlighted that Onam is special because people from all backgrounds celebrate it together.
A Festival for All
The government stressed that Onam is a celebration for every section of society and reflects the idea of equality. The festival is also expected to give a strong boost to tourism in the state.
