IMD warns of heavy rainfall in six Kerala districts as low-pressure over Bay of Bengal intensifies; fisherfolk advised to avoid sea.

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that Kerala will continue to experience widespread rainfall due to a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal. Six districts — Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod — have been placed under a yellow alert for Thursday.

According to the IMD, heavy rainfall (7–11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm in 24 hours) is likely at isolated places in Kerala on August 27. Rainfall between 7 and 11 cm is also expected in some parts of Kerala on August 28 and 29, and in Lakshadweep on August 27.

Radar imagery shows that Kannur district could face heavy rain accompanied by winds up to 50 kmph. The IMD has also restricted fisherfolk from venturing into the sea along the Kerala and Karnataka coasts on Thursday.

Likely Impacts of Heavy Rain

  • Waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas and riverbanks
  • Traffic congestion due to waterlogged roads and reduced visibility
  • Uprooting of trees causing disruptions in power supply
  • Partial damage to houses, huts, and loose structures
  • Increased risk of landslides and mudslides in hilly regions
  • Possible harm to livestock and vulnerable communities in coastal areas

Kerala has been witnessing heavy rainfall since Wednesday, and authorities have urged the public to remain cautious. District disaster management teams are on high alert to respond to emergencies.
