Ernakulam Faces Devastating Monsoon Impact; Red Alert Issued
In an unsettling start to the monsoon season, heavy rain has caused widespread disruption in Ernakulam district on Sunday, May 25, 2025. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for the region, forecasting continued heavy rainfall and dangerous conditions through the coming days. The city of Kochi and surrounding areas have faced significant damage from the relentless rain and powerful winds.
The heavy showers began in the afternoon and intensified by the evening, with rain falling at rates of 5 to 15 mm per hour. Between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., Ernakulam also experienced strong surface winds, reaching speeds of up to 61 km/h, further exacerbating the damage. As of the latest reports, the region remains on high alert, with authorities monitoring the situation closely.
Tree Uprootings and Damage to Infrastructure
The severe weather has resulted in significant damage across Ernakulam, particularly in coastal areas. Strong winds have uprooted several trees, blocking roads and damaging properties. One notable incident occurred in Fort Kochi, where a large tree was uprooted early in the morning on May 25, disrupting traffic and causing damage to nearby structures.
In Kunnathunadu taluk, a residential house sustained significant damage when its outer wall collapsed due to the relentless downpour. Authorities are working to clear debris and ensure the safety of affected residents.
Coastal Areas on High Alert
The IMD’s Red Alert is especially concerning for the coastal villages of Ernakulam. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has raised a warning for extremely high waves of 3.3 to 4 meters along the coastal regions. Local authorities are urging coastal residents to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions as flooding remains a significant risk.
The high tide, coupled with the ongoing rainfall, raises fears of potential flooding in low-lying areas near the Periyar River. Although water levels at monitoring points remain below flood warning thresholds, the situation continues to be closely watched as conditions could change rapidly.
Precautionary Measures and School Closures
As the situation unfolds, several precautionary measures have been put in place. Schools in Ernakulam district were ordered to remain closed on May 26 to ensure the safety of students and staff. Residents are being urged to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially near flood-prone areas and along the coast. Emergency services and disaster management teams have been mobilized to respond to incidents as they arise.
Ongoing Weather Forecast
The IMD has predicted that the heavy rainfall will continue over the next few days, with extremely heavy downpours expected in various parts of Ernakulam. The monsoon season has begun early this year, and authorities are advising the public to remain updated on weather alerts.
The heavy rainfall and high winds are expected to persist, and residents are urged to follow safety protocols. In addition to the monsoon rain, the risk of landslides in hilly areas and flash floods in low-lying regions remains a significant concern.
