India is entering a new phase in urban mobility with the launch of Bharat Taxi, a government-backed ride-hailing service. Developed under the Ministry of Cooperation and the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), the initiative aims to bring fair pricing and driver empowerment to the taxi industry.
Transparent Fares, No Surge Pricing
The government plans to roll out Bharat Taxi’s pilot phase in November. The service will offer clear and fixed fares, removing surge pricing and hidden charges.
Passengers will know the exact fare before booking, making the experience simple and stress-free.
For years, riders have faced sudden price hikes and cancellations on private platforms like Ola and Uber. Bharat Taxi seeks to solve these issues by ensuring fair rates and consistent service.
Drivers as Co-Owners, Not Just Workers
Bharat Taxi introduces a cooperative ownership model. Here, drivers — known as “Saarthis” (meaning charioteers) — will be co-owners and shareholders.
Unlike other cab services that take commissions, Bharat Taxi lets drivers keep 100% of their earnings.
This approach gives drivers more control and financial security. It also ensures profits are shared fairly among those who power the service every day.
Pilot Phase with 650 Saarthis
Around 650 drivers will join the pilot phase of Bharat Taxi. The initiative supports the government’s vision of “Sahakar se Samriddhi” — prosperity through cooperation.
By encouraging community-based business models, the project strengthens both local economies and worker welfare.

Passengers can expect no surge fees, no hidden charges, and no last-minute cancellations. The focus is on reliability and transparency.
