The situation worsened as the Periyar river swelled overnight, affecting areas such as Bosco Colony and Kuttikattukara by morning. Residents recount harrowing experiences of floodwaters seeping into homes, prompting some to seek refuge in relief camps set up by local authorities.
Unnikrishnan, a local resident, shared his concern, “Water started filling the nearby fields early in the morning. By midday, floodwaters had entered our house premises, impacting several households in Bosco Colony. We are monitoring the situation closely and considering relocation to a relief camp if necessary.”
Local officials and community leaders have been actively involved in managing the crisis. Ismail K M, councillor of ward 13, highlighted the sudden rise in water levels reminiscent of previous flooding incidents. “We are working closely with irrigation department officials to mitigate the impact, including the immediate opening of regulatory measures,” he explained.
In Kuttikattukara, social activist Sanal Kannan reported significant displacement, stating, “Many families have already moved to relief camps, with children and elderly among those seeking shelter. Local fire force officials are on-site, assessing the situation and providing necessary support.”
The challenges are compounded by environmental factors, as an irrigation department official noted, “The blockage of waterways due to sediment accumulation from previous floods has exacerbated the current situation. Vigilance along riverbanks remains crucial, especially during the night when natural water flow dynamics are affected.”
Additionally, incidents of infrastructure damage, such as tree uprooting in Rameshwaram village and a building collapse in Mattanchery, highlight the widespread impact of the adverse weather conditions. Traffic disruptions have also been reported in various areas, further complicating recovery efforts.
