US President Donald Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday. The two leaders discussed several major issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war, trade relations, and the situation in Taiwan.
After the call, Trump shared a message on Truth Social.
He wrote, “We have done a good, and very important, deal for our Great Farmers — and it will only get better. Our relationship with China is extremely strong!”
Xi Repeats China’s Position on Taiwan
According to the Chinese foreign ministry, Xi stressed that Taiwan’s return to mainland China is part of the post-war international order.
The US does not take a clear position on Taiwan’s sovereignty. However, it opposes any use of force and is required by law to supply Taiwan with defensive military equipment.
The call came shortly after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan’s military could respond if China acts against Taiwan.
Beijing strongly rejected her statement. China-Japan relations have since reached a new low.
Xi Highlights Historical Links
Xi noted that China and the US once fought together during World War II.
He said both nations should work together to protect the post-war international order.
Trump has continued a policy of strategic ambiguity on whether the US would send troops if conflict breaks out in the Taiwan Strait.
His administration has also urged Taiwan to raise its defence budget.
Earlier this month, Taiwan said it received official approval for a USD 330 million US arms package, which includes fighter jet parts.
China condemned the sale, saying it violated the one-China principle.
Trade Discussions Show No Major Breakthroughs
Trade was also discussed during the call.
However, China did not announce any new deals, including purchases of American soybeans.
Xi said the relationship between the two countries has remained steady since the Busan summit.
He urged both sides to continue making positive progress.
Ukraine Conflict Also on the Agenda
The leaders also talked about the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
Xi said the conflict should be solved at its root, according to the Chinese statement.
