Schallenberg noted that effective foreign policy increasingly relies on sustained engagement with key partners outside of Europe.

The discussion at the conference comes on the heels of a significant event in the India-Austria relationship. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Austria in July 2024 marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 41 years. This visit was aimed at elevating bilateral relations and celebrating 75 years of diplomatic ties.

During the visit, both Modi and Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer highlighted the shared values of democracy, international peace, and a rules-based international order. They underscored the importance of strengthening their partnership through cooperation in technology, economy, and global security.

The leaders also discussed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region, focusing on maritime security and adherence to international laws such as UNCLOS. They explored collaboration on various fronts, including green and digital technologies, renewable energy, and smart cities.

Additionally, the leaders supported the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) and expressed interest in participating in this initiative. They pledged to work together on climate action, focusing on Austria’s Hydrogen Strategy and India’s Green Hydrogen Mission to tackle climate change.

Both nations reiterated their dedication to multilateralism and reforming the United Nations. India supported Austria’s candidacy for the UNSC for 2027-28, while Austria backed India’s candidacy for 2028-29. The meeting also highlighted ongoing collaborations in innovation and entrepreneurship through initiatives like the Start-Up Bridge and Austria’s Global Incubator Network.
